Proficiency Requirements for 2010/2011
Thinking of joining the Club and doing your Bronze Medallion?
What is your Bronze Medallion, what will I be learning?
Before you can do your Bronze Medallion with Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club, you must:
- Join the Club (and be covered by insurance)
- Purchase a Training Manual and workbook from the Club
- Complete a timed pool swim of 400 meters in 9 minutes and have this certified by an accredited body (such as Kincumber Swim Centre, Gosford Pool etc)
Once you have completed the above, your name will go on the list and one of our Trainers will contact you when we prepare for the next course. As a rule, courses run for 6-8 weeks, with two sessions per week, one week night for the theory component, and one weekend morning for the water activities:- learning how to paddle rescue boards, swim with a tube, and rescue scenarios.
2009 Changes to the Training Manual
Memebrs are encouraged to continue their training through the various awards that are available to surf lifesavers. Awards are recognised throughout Australia as SLS NSW is a recognised trainer.

As part of the Surf Life Saving Movement, various awards are available for you to undertake, and we encourage all our members to achieve these awards.

- Bronze Medallion (15 years & over)
- Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC) (15 years & over)
- IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Driver (17 years & over)
- IRB Crewman (15 years & over)
- Surf Rescue Certificate (13 years & over, Contact Matt Penn, Chairman of Nippers)
- Radio Operator Certificate
