RECORD NUMBER IN THE SWIM

All 187 (highest ever) were pleased to see the swell drop, the oceans calm and the sun out on the Saturday morning, however the tempature of the water had dropped over 5 degrees in the last week. 17.2 degrees C on the day of the race had many competitors reaching for their wetsuits, rash vests, and silicone swimming caps. Michael Hunter (Principal of Raine & Horne) handed out (attractive pink) swimming caps to everyone to ensure they remained warm.

Surf Rescue TV show were there to record all the banter on the start line, and interview the winners in past years: Wade Coster and Jade Condon.

After the traditional photo of all competitors, the walk to north avoca was again a great way to review each race plan, and the age old question of 'swim wide of the beach' or 'swim close' was again under great debate.

Under the watchful eye of Murry Braund competitors were again briefed, the hooter sounded, and a fantastic splash through the break to the first buoy.

Swimmers talked of varying temperatures, a little chop as they passed the shark tower, and a challenging rip on the way in at the southern rocks.

Mens: Wade Coster (19.38 mins), Robert Annabel (19.40 mins), Darren Clarke (19.58 mins)

Ladies: Jessica Davis (19.53 mins), Jade Condon (20.01 mins), Amy Annabel (21.34 mins)

This year the following competitors completed their 10th Swim and were presented a framed photo of the local beaches: Paul Johnston, Tony Curran, Erin Braund, Simon Andrew, Jeff Smith (North Avoca), Garth Hunter, Jeff Doyle, Craig Hunter, Jeff Barnes, Brian Dillon, and Wayne Ludlam.

At the presentation, each competitor was awarded with their personalised certificate (detailing all their times in the past 17 annual swims), a photo of them at the start, and a COMPETITOR rash vest for their training in the coming months.

"It is again a pleasure to be involved with both surf clubs, and to be able to reward all the active patrolling members with a great event" Said Mr Michael Hunter. "This event has become a highlight of the comeptition calendar, and we are proud to be associated with such a great club culture"

Note for all swimmers: next year, the registration tables will ONLY be at Avoca Beach SLSC, so North Avoca club members will need to register at Avoca before the swim.

24th February 2008 swim

On Sunday 24 February 134 swimmers lined up to compete in the annual Hunters Rocks to Rocks Swim. The 1.5 km swim was contested by a big swell incoming from the rocks at North Avoca that tested many swimmers.

Wade Coster was the first competitor to swim to shore in a time of twenty minutes and fifteen seconds and Jade Conden was the first female to complete the course at a time of twenty-one minutes and forty-two seconds. After the race many competitors commented on the stingrays seen on the ocean floor as they swam along.

Gary Clarke, president of the Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club said, “The swim is a great event that brings two competing clubs together.”

Rick Parsons the President of the North Avoca Surf Life Saving Club and MC for the presentations thanked Raine & Horne for their sponsorship. Michael Hunter, Principal of Raine & Horne Terrigal – Avoca Beach said, “We are proud to sponsor this event for the sixteenth year.”

2009 Swim - Sun 36th April

28 Registered on our web site before the day.  Unfortunately, big seas in the preceding week deterred competitors and there were only a few registrations on the day. On the morning, the sea was OK, permitting the conduct of the swim, however the westerly wind increased throughout the morning – to the point where Rod Butler, Steve Jung and Rob Davies needed to add more load to each of the large yellow buoys lest they blow to New Zealand.  Swimmers reported that out the back the currents gave a washing-machine effect and by the time they went up and down and around a few times, they swam over 3 km. Ultimately, the wind did blow the buoys some distance, and all competitors returned to the beach having faced the challenge of chasing down a moving buoy.

From all reports everyone enjoyed it, especially being back on the beach on dry land.  The presentation of the medals and prizes was conducted by Mr Garry Clarke on behalf of the club, and Brett Hunter on behalf of Raine & Horne Avoca Beach – the major sponsor of the swim.

2008 Swim

Fast times, dolphins and $3,000 of prizes!
Now in its fifth year, the Hunters Avoca Beach Ocean Swim is fast becoming the favored competition ‘up north’ for the Sydney ocean swimming fraternity, and is of course the preeminent ocean swim on the Central Coast. “All swimming clubs on the coast are supporting these events and we’re happy to be contributing to the healthy coastal lifestyle” said Mr Michael Hunter, Principal of Raine & Horne Avoca Beach and principal sponsor for the event. “As one of the major fundraisers for the Avoca Beach SLSC these events are also important in providing the financial support for the club to be well positioned with equipment and training to keep the beach safe each summer” said Mr Hunter.

This years winner in a time of 32 minutes and 32 seconds was Lauren Hall followed closely by Avoca’s local boy; Daniel Shade in 32 minutes 44 seconds. There were 111 competitors all who successfully completed the ocean facing triangle course in the Avoca Bay. Male then Female competitors started at the most southern corner of Avoca Beach and benefited greatly from the permanent rip taking them directly to the first marker buoy. Once out past the break, the going was easy with light southerly breeze and water temperature stable at 21 degrees. The most easterly buoy however saw many competitors battle a southerly ocean current and some had to turn back and swim an additional 100m just to round the ocean buoy. After rounding the last buoy near the North Avoca rocks, all competitors swum back along the beach and came ashore, up the race of for-sale signs and received their times, bananas and Powerade.

Garry Clarke, President of the Avoca Beach SLSC made the presentations to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed competitors in each of the age groups in both male and female: 12-18, open, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60 and 61+ years. On the podium, each place getter received a Raine & Horne enviro-bag with medal, swimming costume vouchers, goggles, water bottle, dinner vouchers, surf club equipment bags, Nivea skin care products and watches.

This event continues to be proudly sponsored and supported by Michael Hunter and his family, Raine & Horne Avoca Beach as the principal sponsors with Zoggs Goggles, Dunes Swim-ware, Powerade, Avoca Beach Locksmith and Hardware and the Avoca Beach SLSC all providing their generous support. This year in excess of $3,000 prizes were given in a lucky-dip after the presentations.
