THE AVOCA SONG

Cheers Boys! Cheers Boys!

Here we are Avoca

Every now and then you hear our name

Hear our Name

For we’re coming to compete

And we do not like defeat

And you’ll hear of us again and again

Faster….

We’re a jolly bunch of fellows

And each one is a star

And if you want to find us

You can find us in the bar

And if you want to join the Club

You are not too young or old

And you can be a member of the

Blue, Green and the Gold.!

Should old acquaintance be forgot…

Keep your eyes on the blue, green and gold!

 Buy A Brick

As part of the Avoca Behac SLSC building project, the club has initated a 'buy a brick' for the club which will assist in raising the large sum of money required for the building renovations.

The intention is to give the whole community and club members an opportunity to participate in the rebuilding of the club and acknowledge them through name plaques in the entry of the new club. This plaque will remain for the lifespan of the renovated building as an ongoing tribute to their assistance.

The program will acknowledge donors on a three tier system on the following basis:

Tier 1 - Donations of $300 - individual or family name engraved on plaque along with the names of all the Tier 1 donors.

Tier 2 - Donations of $1,000 - individual or family name engraved on an individual plaque

Tier 3 - Donations of $5,000 - individual or family or business names engraved on larger individual plaque and website displayed.

All donations are tax deductible as donations to a building project for charity. All donations already received for the building project will be acknowledged under this scheme.

For more information, contact Garry Clarke               Or Click here to download your 'buy-a-brick' form

 Building of a New Clubhouse

5 November 2005

History of Avoca Beach Rock Pool

History of our Club

On 6 January 1929, 7 days after a tragic double drowning at Avoca Beach, the community got together and the foundation club for Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club was formed.  Four months later the club had 12 Foundation Bronze Holders, even though the Club still did not have its own reel!  In 1930 the Club gained its first surfboat and a further 6 Bronze Medallion holders.

In 1929, the Clubhouse was valued at 115 pounds; it was built by voluntary labour and was later relocated to its present position.  By 1950’s the Clubhouse was far too small for its needs and in 1958 the new plans for a Clubhouse were finalised with the present Clubhouse completed in the 1964-65 season. 1971 saw a major extension to the back, and then in the 2004-2005 season plans were again  finalised and grants sourced for the refurbishment and rebuilding of the Clubhouse, with the building reopened in August 2006.

NOTABLE RESCUES:
J.D. Miller, 1931: Whilst still a probationary member of the club and recuperating at his home, witnessed a person being washed out to sea.  Mr Miller raced to beach and donned a belt attached  to a box line, he swam the full length of the line, then when another line was attached continued to swim until he reached his now unconscious patient.  Both were then reeled in and then despite his exhausted state, Mr Miller then commenced resuscitation.

S. Pickett & JD Miller, 1933: Two people were washed out to sea in extreme conditions, a box line sent to rescue them, came entangled in the rocks, and S Pickett went out to untangle the line, and received such severe lacerations that he was hospitalised for several weeks. Mr Miller then joined the rescue when taking out a surfboat, the boat soon capsized, and Mr Miller  found the stowed lifebelts and gave them to his companions and then swam to shore.  Unfortunately, one person lost their life during this brave rescue in treacherous circumstances.

Frank T Gallard, 1948:  Whilst in row boat several kilometres out to sea, a large shark attacked their boat, causing the boat to submerge, bailing was useless and the boat unmanageable, when Mr Gallard made the decision to swim to shore, finally reaching the shore he was able to summon help, and a surf boat with Bruce Wall, Francis Fahey and Kevin McKinnon with Trevor Gallard, then were able to rescue the two remaining members in the boat.

Terry Hunter, 1961:  A group of bathers were swept out to sea in mountainous surf, Mr Hunter, with the aid of another member,  donned the belt and went out to sea,  he secured his first patient shortly after, however, problems with the reel in the huge surf, saw Terry shed his belt so that his patient could be hauled in.  He then continued out in the surf to rescue another 4 bathers and returned to beach, where he was informed that there was still one patient out to sea, despite his weariness he donned the belt and made his way out in the seas and returned with the last patient.

Jim and John Mitchell  1978:  Whilst competing in the semi finals of the State Titles, encountered a tourist in difficulties, they managed to bring the patient ashore, and even though they had just completed a race immediately commenced resuscitation, saving the man's life.

Stuart Harvey, 2004:  On hearing of an outpost emergency not from where he was picnicking. Stuart ran to the beach, borrowed a child's surfboard, negotiating a 4m surf to rescue 2 men in trouble. Stuart then faced a tough decision, one man was semi conscious, and the other face down in the water, Stuart got to the semi conscious patient, and had no choice but to head out to sea amidst the massive waves.  When the first IRB approached, Stuart directed them to the other patient, the second IRB took the patient, and finally Stuart was brought to shore by a jet ski.
