What is the difference between a Lifeguard and a Lifesaver?

On NSW Central Coast beaches you will find Lifeguards patrolling our beaches on weekdays (Monday to Friday) wearing a new teal blue and navy uniform to keep in line with other NSW lifeguards. Lifeguards are employed by the local council and work throughout the season on our patrolled beaches. The council employed lifeguards are all trained to the highest of standards and do a wonderful job keeping our beaches safe during the week.

Lifesavers, on the other hand, are dressed in the traditional red and yellow we’ve all come to associate with surf life saving, and at Avoca, they are ALL volunteers. These wonderful people from our community give up their weekends and public holidays to help to keep beachgoers safe. These volunteers are members of our club and are also trained to the highest of standards through the club-run and branch-run courses (club-run courses are also facilitated by volunteers).

Avoca Beach SLSC are very blessed to have such a great bunch of members who give up their time to patrol our beach. If you see a lifeguard or lifesaver on the beach over the summer break, be sure to give them a smile and a wave and thank them for their hard work.
